How do you pronounce Koinonia?

Our name (pronounced koi-nō-nē’-ä) comes from a Greek word that means “fellowship.” John uses this word in 1 John 1:3 when he says, “That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ.” We chose this name because we want to encourage and facilitate this kind of koinonia.

I would love for my child to attend KCCS but I can’t afford it. What can I do?

We believe deeply in the mission of Koinonia Classical Christian School. Jesus said to let the little children come and we intend to do just that.

KCCS has pledged to never turn any family away simply because of a true inability to pay. To determine what we can offer you, a detailed look at your income and expenses will be necessary. We will work with you to carefully and thoroughly consider your financial situation. To apply for financial assistance contact the Headmaster at [email protected] to set up an appointment.

Why aren’t all the books included in the tuition?

In an effort to keep tuition costs as low as possible, we have opted to not include some of the required books. This will mean that the books you purchase, whether new or used, will belong to you and you can pass them down to siblings, sell them, or keep them as a fantastic start to your student’s personal library.

Does KCCS provide hot lunches?

No, students need to bring their lunch each day. KCCS does provide additional snacks and drinks.

Why aren’t there classes on Fridays?

While we do assign homework on Fridays, we do not have regular classes on Fridays. We believe we can be most effective with our curriculum and our curriculum goals with classes four days a week.

Is there after school care available?

Presently we do not offer afterschool care. However, this is something we are considering in the future. If you have a need for afterschool care, please speak to a KCCS teacher or administrator.

Why uniforms?

We require school uniforms for the following reasons:

  • Pressures felt by children to compete in areas of dress are destructive to the unity of the school and the body of Christ.
  • Uniformity of dress code and common school colors help foster school spirit and identity.
  • Uniforms actually help a student develop their own individuality and personality. Freed from the shallow means of using external attire to conform to whatever trend is popular, a student can proclaim their identity through the more meaningful methods of their character, actions, and speech.
  • Our dress code is not neutral or arbitrary; it is a cultural representation of what is going on at Koinonia Classical Christian School. Our uniform represents that we are serious about scholarship.
  • Uniforms tend to decrease the cost of student clothing. Often parents need only purchase two or three sets of uniforms to last throughout the school year, and often these items can be handed down to other children.

What sports programs does KCCS offer?

Besides our school-yard games of kickball, we do not currently offer any organized athletic programs. We hope this changes in the future.

Can KCCS students participate in public school athletics or other public school extracurricular activities?

Presently none of the independent school districts in or around Taylor allow non-enrolled students to participate even though all of our students’ families pay property taxes that fund the local public school system. We would love to see this change soon and for our students to have the option to participate in the public schools’ athletics and other extracurricular activities if they so choose.

Is KCCS accredited and are the teachers certified?

KCCS is a member of the Association of Classical Christian Schools and is working toward accreditation from this agency that we highly respect and value. We have no interest in seeking the approval of secular agencies nor will we lower the standards of Biblical excellence by educating according to the world’s standards.

As Douglas Wilson says, “Excellence is not guaranteed by a piece of paper. Excellence in education is the result of vision, hard work, parental love, and a clear sense of mission. It does not depend upon bureaucratic accreditation.”

Our Primary (K-6th) teachers are all dedicated, capable educators (some with experience in government schools and programs, some home educators) who again, have no interest in being affirmed by any secular agency. When we see what so-called “certified professionals” are producing from grade school to the college level—people who don’t even know the difference between a boy and a girl for example—it should be sufficient to expose the lie that many have believed, which is that only someone who has been “approved” and “equipped” by the unbelieving state or some other God-denying agency, is qualified to teach our children the truth and give them a good and fruitful education.

At KCCS, we absolutely strive for educational excellence and take our task seriously which is why we are a member of the Association of Classical Christian Schools and are working toward accreditation and teacher certification from this agency.

Because of our partnership with Logos Online School, our Secondary (7-12th) program is accredited and the teachers, who teach our students remotely (online), are all very well equipped for their tasks.

Why are 7-12 grades taught remotely by teachers online?

Our partnership with Logos Online School allows us to offer extremely high-quality education to our secondary students that would have been impossible for us to give them otherwise. The online program is rigorous and is designed to meet or exceed most higher education institution’s entry and scholarship requirements. All KCCS students meeting graduation requirements will receive an honors-level diploma. Read more about our secondary (7-12) program here.

What does KCCS teach about evolution?

We teach that the theory of evolution is not only false but is laughably un-scientific. Evolution is foolishness of the highest order—the kind that says there is no God, no Creator, no Maker, even though that is not what the Bible says. We believe and teach the truth which is that God created the universe the way the Bible says. We even believe He did this in six literal days and rested on the seventh day (Genesis 2:1-2).

What does KCCS teach in regards to Critical Race Theory (CRT)?

We completely reject this theory which is at its foundation a false, wicked, and gospel-denying worldview that only serves to promote injustice and feed sinful prejudice. Positively, we teach that all people, no matter their skin color, are part of the one human race. We teach that while our skin may look different, our sin all smells of the same decaying rottenness to the Holy God, and yet the gospel actually brings reconciliation between God and man as well as reconciliation between sinful men in Christ Jesus, no matter our skin color, economic station, or country of origin. We also teach that students are to be grateful. Grateful for the parents and heritage God gives them. Grateful for the bodies God gives them, including their skin, whatever color it may be. And grateful for whatever other blessings God graciously sees fit to provide, even if those blessings include generational wealth and privilege.

Does KCCS require students to be vaccinated?

Don’t be ridiculous. We’re not communists. Vaccinating your child or not is your business, not ours.

What if my child has been diagnosed with a learning disability?

It is an unfortunate reality that it is financially expedient and convenient for government schools to label children with real and imagined disabilities and disorders. Some parents even lean into the diagnosis craze because it gives them a plausible-sounding excuse for their child’s misbehavior or lack of discipline. Some of these labels are no more than therapeutic names for sin, or pejorative names for perfectly normal, childish behavior that doesn’t need anything more than good, old-fashioned patience and Christian discipleship/discipline.

However, there are also students with actual difficulties, and while recognizing that we cannot help in all situations, our approach is simple. First, we make it clear to parents and students that our expectations for them will always be consistent with the Scriptures. For example, if a student has been diagnosed with “ADHD” we would still expect parents and their student to demonstrate a reliance on the Holy Spirit, not chemicals, for self-control. Or if a student has been diagnosed with something pointing to a potential for extra difficulty reading, we would still expect that student to do their best as unto the Lord. Second, we would rely on the fact that, unlike government school teachers, our teachers have reasonable class sizes that they can actually manage to give full attention to the individual needs of their individual students.

We make it clear to our students who may have extra difficulties, that these difficulties only mean they will have to work that much harder and not fall back on excuses, real or imagined.

We know and affirm that each student is unique and we want to help each student reach their own fullest academic potential. We know and affirm that academic potential is not the same for everyone. We know and affirm that not every student is suited for classroom education, and therefore not all are suited for the education we offer at Koinonia Classical Christian School. Some may require exclusive one-on-one attention, and that is not what we offer.

So, after all of that if you would like to talk to us about your student and see if they would be a good fit here, feel free to contact us.

What safety measures does KCCS take to protect students?

General Stonewall Jackson once said, “My religious belief teaches me to feel as safe in battle as in bed. God has fixed the time for my death. I do not concern myself about that, but to be always ready, no matter when it may overtake me. Captain, that is the way all men should live, and then all would be equally brave.”

In the first place, as Christians, we pray and trust our Heavenly Father to protect us in His perfect providence. This isn’t a cop-out. We know and trust that not one hair can fall from our head apart from our Father’s will. We recognize that if an evil person was intent to do harm on our campus, no one could stop that attempt, however, we have safety measures and protocols in place, which of course we will not disclose here.

Know that our eyes are up, doors are locked, and teachers on our campus are armed with more than pea-shooting carry guns. We will not hesitate to protect students in our care at all costs.
